All About Upper Respiratory Infections in Pet Rats | URIs | Does My Rat Have A URI?

An Upper Respiratory Infections, also known as URI, is very common in pet rats. They are predisposed to mycoplasma, a bacteria that nearly all rats carry. Flare-ups can occur, causing your pet rat to have an upper respiratory infection. Signs of a URI include: sneezing, porphyrin (a red substance around the eyes and nose), wheezing, squeaking, or clicking in their lungs, and a change in their breathing. When caught early, URIs are treatable with medicine from your vet. These medicines may include Baytril (enrofloxacin) or doxycycline. These medicines should be given for at least 2 weeks. URIs can also be caused from poor/dusty bedding, an dirty cage, a cage that has poor ventilation, or from other fragrances used around the house (candles, smoke, etc). In this video, I go over what a URI is, what a URI sounds like, how it can be treated, what to look for, what else could be causing your rat’s sneezes, and medicine.
