Some people may be surprised to know that stingrays thrive in freshwater as they are often only seen in the ocean but there are many different freshwater stingray species across the world. Freshwater stingrays can be found in the waters of Africa, Australia and south America. The two most popular species of freshwater stingray are the motoro stingray and the black diamond stingray.
Freshwater stingrays are very large and very beautiful and because of this they demand a very high asking price and this makes them a very intriguing breeding project. Breeding freshwater stingrays may be financially rewarding but it is by no means an easy feet. Freshwater stingrays need very clean water and this isn’t helped by the fact they produce a lot of ammonia for their size. Stingrays give birth to live young called pups and these pups are relatively easy to raise as they are already almost fully formed and some of the best foods to feed freshwater stingray pups is live blood worm and other meaty foods.
Unfortunately there is another worrying trend with freshwater stingrays in Asia as some are being amputated as pups and some are genetically altered to create batman rays. Freshwater stingrays are beautiful on their own and don’t need to be altered in this way. Luckily these man made fish are still very rare and hopefully wont catch on.
