Platy Fish: Expert Care Guide & Tank Set Up For Beginners (Xiphophorus maculatus)
Looking for a colorful, hardy fish that’s easy to breed and looks great with live plants? Platies have always been one of our favorite livebearers to recommend to both beginners and veterans. Platy fish are freshwater fish that belong to the Poeciliidae family. They are often referred to as platies or southern platy fish. Platy fish are quite common among freshwater aquarists. They’re beautiful, low-maintenance, and quite fun to observe! The two species most commonly available in fish stores are Xiphophorus maculatus (southern platyfish) and Xiphophorus variatus (variable or variatus platy). They can crossbreed with each other and with swordtail species, which has resulted in many different color variations. Platy fish are the “old reliables” of the fish-keeping community. Introduced into the trade well over 100 years ago, they’ve been captivating enthusiasts ever since. Thanks to their easy-going nature and general hardiness, these freshwater fish are an excellent choice for beginners. But due to the many varieties out there, seasoned hobbyists and collectors adore them as well.
