Dog Care Tips

When your reactive dog isnโ€™t getting enough sleep ๐Ÿฅฑ

If your dog is not getting enough sleep, making progress on a behaviour plan will be increasingly difficult ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ˜–

The trouble with a sleep deficit is that we know from human and rodent studies that we cannot make up for lost daily sleep over an extended period ๐Ÿฅฑ

โ€ผ๏ธ Sleep deficit is correlated with increased cortisol levels, which can contribute to health problems in the long term and contribute to increased irritability in the short term ๐Ÿ˜ค

โžก๏ธ If your dog is consistently irritable, responding to triggers with barking and lunging โ–ถ๏ธ they are rehearsing these behaviours and getting better barking and lunging with practice!

โ€ผ๏ธ The other concern with sustained sleep deficit is that your dogโ€™s brain is not getting the restorative benefits of sleep ๐Ÿง

โžก๏ธ This will make it harder for your dog to retain what they are learning with a behaviour modification plan or training

๐Ÿ• What about working or sporting line dogs?

โœ… Yes, EVEN dogs bred to work need their sleep to function effectively and for peak performance
