When your reactive dog isnโt getting enough sleep ๐ฅฑ

If your dog is not getting enough sleep, making progress on a behaviour plan will be increasingly difficult ๐ฉ๐
The trouble with a sleep deficit is that we know from human and rodent studies that we cannot make up for lost daily sleep over an extended period ๐ฅฑ
โผ๏ธ Sleep deficit is correlated with increased cortisol levels, which can contribute to health problems in the long term and contribute to increased irritability in the short term ๐ค
โก๏ธ If your dog is consistently irritable, responding to triggers with barking and lunging โถ๏ธ they are rehearsing these behaviours and getting better barking and lunging with practice!
โผ๏ธ The other concern with sustained sleep deficit is that your dogโs brain is not getting the restorative benefits of sleep ๐ง
โก๏ธ This will make it harder for your dog to retain what they are learning with a behaviour modification plan or training
๐ What about working or sporting line dogs?
โ Yes, EVEN dogs bred to work need their sleep to function effectively and for peak performance
