It is often hard to determine exactly what is going on with just a physical exam. To locate the exact of a limp, wrist or paw sprain an X-Ray is often needed. In younger dogs sprains can be caused by vigorous play such as jumping up and down.
If not too serious they could take some time to heal with some cage rest. Pain can be reduced with steriods. A big or serious fracture is easier to diagnose. Fractures in the ankles can be in one of a series of bones. If not fractured or broken then the leg is probably sprained or strained.
