Caring for Orphaned Puppies | Sweetie Pie Pets by Kelly Swift

I have 4 beautiful apple head Chihuahua puppies, new born babies. Sadly, the momma did not make it during delivery and now these orphaned puppies need to be saved. These unexpected orphans need to be cared for 24 hours a day, fed, cleaned, and kept warm.

My first situation was to find colostrum, a natural substance mommas produce in the first 24-48 hours for their babies. I was fortunate to find Re-Borne Bovine Colostrum at my local vet supply store. Although it’s is from cows, this colostrum is suitable for barnyard animals, horses, and kittens and puppies as well. I used a syringe with a “Miracle Nipple” to hand feed them colostrum every 3 hours, and after 1 day, I began feeding these puppies formula using a silicone puppy feeding station. It’s truly amazing.

Finally, our senior grandma Chihuahua, Reina, has gladly taken on the duties of cleaning and cuddling these babies. She views them as her own and this is really coming in handy between feedings. This is sad day, but we’re hoping for the best.
