Why Is My Rat Sneezing?

Please read for more information; If your rat is sneezing frequently and every day and they are not showing any signs of illness then check their environment for irritants.

Keep your rat bedding and food in a clean dry area, away from household cleaners and anything that could contaminate it including other animals.

Sneezing may be common in rats but should not be considered normal and you need to find out what is causing it.

If your rat is sneezing and their breathing is noisy or they are showing signs of stress or illness (see check list below) then take them to the vet as soon as possible for antibiotic treatment.

Respiratory infections can quickly develop into pneumonia which can be fatal.

Signs of illness and stress in rats;

Porphyrin; a reddish brown discharge from the nose and/or eyes.

Noisy breathing or wheezing.

Coat puffed out (not in aggressive state).

Body hunched.

Eyes closed or half closed (with other symptoms).

Shaking.

Lethargic.

Not eating or drinking.

Changes in behaviour, unusual aggression to you or other rats.

Unresponsive.

Bleeding from any part of the body.

Please note; Female rats do not have periods (menstruate) bleeding from the uterus or bladder is due to infection or tumours or possibly both. These conditions are very serious and painful you must see a vet straight away.

Remember rat illnesses progress rapidly, never delay getting treatment for your rat.
Also, it is extremely cruel and irresponsible to leave a rat(or any animal) to suffer.
