When To Take Your Pet Bird to the Vet | Bird Owner Tips
Veterinarians recommend annual checkups for pet birds but let’s be honest: some bird owners won’t take their birds to the vet unless there’s an emergency. The question is – when is it an “emergency”?
Some signs we can look for are:
– getting fluffed up and staying so as if they’re trying to keep themselves warm
– suddenly becoming very quiet or hoarse or squeaky
– breathing with mouths open or bobbing their tails up and down
– not eating, vomiting, regurgitating after eating, or having loose droppings
– tucking up or hiding their head under their wing
– sleeping more than usual
– shaking or seizuring
These are just some of the common reasons but to be sure, you know your birds best so when you notice something is off with your bird, take them to the vet. You should also be aware of a local vet near you for when your veterinarian isn’t available. The key is to prepare ahead for emergencies and to be observant of what’s normal and what is not for your pet birds.
