Small Animal Care Tips
This rat has mites. Scratching, itching and biting fur are signs of mites.
In 2018, someone surrendered their pet rat to us. He was constantly itchy, scratching and biting himself. His fur was scruffy and patchy. He had a very bad case of mites. After we cured him with Ivermectin, he was happy and comfortable, and we immediately found him a home.
If your rat looks like him, please get him treated ASAP. Mites are highly contagious, so you will need to treat any other rats who have come in contact with the itchy ones, even indirectly (like through toys or playing in the same areas.) And you will need to thoroughly clean anything they have come in contact with after you treat them. It’s probably best to throw away any bedding, hammocks or toys they used.
Mites suck, but it’s not the end of the world. This rat got better very quickly, and had a happy life after that. Yours will, too!
