Small Animal Care Tips
Steppe Lemmings Colony (exotic rodent pet)
13 elderly steppe lemmings needed a home, so we took them in. They were eighteen months old and mixed, so Mickelmarsh Mouse House kindly took on the four boys. Babies weren’t that likely at that age, but they’d already had enough!
These girls were very active, and quite vocal. I loved watching them and it was great that they never realised how old they were until the last day of their lives.
They were an absolute joy to keep – they are diabetic, so you need to be careful with diet but general care is rather easy. Like gerbils they really must have room to dig and burrow, and you can see how much they appreciate having a wheel to run on. I tried two for a bit, but they never learnt to share!
