Welcome to our channel, in this video part of our series on raising rabbits for meat we show you how to hand feed a baby rabbit – how to feed milk to a baby rabbit.

Last week our doe gave birth to 6 baby rabbits and the next day died without us having a surrogate mother available to help feed the baby rabbits.

We had two options available to us let nature take over and allow the baby rabbits to die or intervene and hand feed the baby rabbits.

The mother died Saturday evening after all the shops had closed with the baby rabbits with full stomachs, the following day I tried to find full-fat goats milk but this was not available.

Monday morning I popped to our local pet store and bought Kitten replacement milk Lactol along with a syringe kit for feeding baby rabbits and other orphaned baby animals.

Rabbits milk is the richest milk, hence why baby rabbits grow so fast allowing the mothers only to visit the nest once every 24 hours to feed to avoid predators finding the nest.

The best available milk to hand feed baby rabbits is a kitten replacement milk in powdered form, there are several makes available and at our local pet store, I purchased the Lactol Kitten replacement milk.

Because Rabbits milk is so rich it is necessary to hand feed the baby rabbits 3 or 4 times per day with the kitten milk.

How to hand feed a baby rabbit?

Here are the steps on how to feed milk to a baby rabbit:

1: Using boiled water mix with the lactol kitten replacement milk and allow it to be lukewarm when feeding the baby rabbit.
2: wrap the baby rabbit in a towel or kitchen paper – this catches any spillages and helps prevent the rabbit from moving to much without causing injury to the baby rabbit.
3: Before you start feeding the baby rabbit the milk wipe a damp cotton wool ball or wet kitchen towel on its lower belly and private parts – this imitates the mother’s tongue to tell the baby rabbit that feeding is ready to commence.
4: Put slight pressure on the syringe to form a droplet of milk and place on the baby rabbits mouth ( rabbit should be slightly upright )
5: With luck the baby rabbit will open its mouth for you to place the tip of the syringe in the side of it mouth to start feeding.
6: Make sure you feel the syringe to the desired amount of the Lactol kitten replacement milk and keep feeding the baby rabbit the milk until its all gone.
7: During the feeding of the baby rabbit its important to just feed a small amount each time and just give a few seconds before providing more milk – it is possible to drown a baby rabbit during hand feeding so it’s very important to go slow.

It takes me now depending on which baby rabbit I’m feeding between 5 and 10 minutes to feed.
