Bird-Proofing Your Home – Tips For Bird Owners
Letting your pet bird out of its cage can be a lot of fun – for both you and the bird. However, it can also be very dangerous if you haven’t properly bird-proofed your home. Avian veterinarians see a lot of bird injuries that could have been prevented with some basic bird-proofing.
First and foremost – ALWAYS supervise your bird when it is out of its cage. Birds are naturally curious and have a knack for getting into trouble. Before you let your bird out, check for obvious hazards like these:
– Turn off ceiling fans
– Close windows
– Keep your bird away from hot coffee or pots on the stove
– Put out any open flames like candles or your fireplace
– Put away wires
You can also reduce risk by ensuring your bird’s cage has engaging toys and the right kinds of bird food and treats. If your bird’s cage is a stimulating environment, it may be less likely to chew things when it gets out to explore.
