Swordtail Fish Care Guide & Tank Set-up
This video will help with Swordtail Fish (Xiphophorus hellerii) Care & Tank Set-up. The tank in the video is a 20 Gallon with 8 Swordtail fish in it & was recently set-up.I used chipped rocks, clay pots & amazon sword plants for the tank decor. The females in the video are already pregnant & I might have swordtail fry in 2 weeks.
Swordtail Fish Information –
These fish are Native to North & Central America & can grow upto 6 inches, they can live upto 5 years in an Aquarium.
The Male Swordtail has an elongated Caudal fin which looks like a Sword, hence the name “SWORDTAIL”
The Female Sword tail grows bigger than the male.
Swordtail fish are good option for a community tank. Tank mates for Swordtails include live bearers like mollies, guppies, zebra danio, gourami etc. Its best to keep 1 Male Swordtail for every 2 females.
Swordtail Fish Aquarium Care :
– Tank Size – 20 Gallon or more
– pH range – 7 to 8.
– Temperature range – 72 to 82 degree Fahrenheit.
– Water Hardness – 10 to 15 dH
– Food – Sword Tail Fish are Omnivores, Pellets, flakes, Live food & vegetables like zucchini, cucumber can be fed (twice a day)
-Tank Decor – Live plants are advisable for Swordtail fish tank.
-Filtration- HOB filter or Sponge filter would work well in a Swordtail fish tank.
