should you use bio balls in saltwater aquarium

should you use bio balls in saltwater aquarium. saltwater aquarium care and maintenance videos by rotter tube reef. Bio balls are used to house bacteria in your saltwater aquarium. Bacteria is needed to in a saltwater aquarium to keep your saltwater fish and aquarium alive. The idea is the more bacteria you have, the better. Bio balls are sold by reef stores to house more bacteria. Bio ball actually do a little more harm then good. While they house extra bacteria, it is not needed. The live rock in your saltwater tank and the sand, along with the glass of the saltwater aquarium all house the beneficial bacteria your reef tank needs. Bio balls actually trap fish food and waste, which then break down in your water, rotting, causing higher nitrates, which are issues for your saltwater tank. You do not need bio balls for a healthy saltwater aquarium.
