How to rinse sand for fish aquariums is very easy. Fish tank sand should be rinsed before adding it to your aquarium. Rinsing it helps remove and clean all the debris and possible oils that you don’t want in your fish tank. Some of that could be harmful to your fish as well.

My apartment is wall to wall tanks and enclosures of a couple cages. It’s also a jungle… my friend told me that I created my own environment. I do have furniture but I try not to feed that. Did I mention the cat that keeps everyone in order. Not furniture.
Well I have videos hand feeding my blood parrots and flowerhorn. I have definitely opened people eyes to the enjoyment of keeping fish as pets.
That was pretty much my husband’s outlook on it until he finished building the stand and I got to start decorating and adding fish. He was wayyyy more involved than I thought he would be and his excitement was so cute. I think he watches the fish more than I do now.
No one in my circle of humans (family or friends) understands why I have aquariums. Most just roll their eyes & say it’s just a waste of money.
It depends on the fish lol. Some fish have personality and some really don’t. My planted neon tetra and shrimp tank is furniture I feed but even when I had goldfish they were pets they each had distinctive personalities.
Some people just don’t get it. I’m all about strange and weird pets, I’m quite used to general public looking at my precious companions as pests, furniture or a novelty as sad as that is. I’ve heard “it’s just a ______” so many times my ears could bleed lmao
I don’t hate or resent these people, I pity them.
They’ll never know what it’s like to walk into their house and see their fish or other strange critters going batshit in the tank/enclosure because “YOURE HOME FOOD LADY!?!?”
That feeling when you know these small aquatic creatures recognize you.
My co workers are starting to realize that the bettas I take care of at work know me, I walk down the stairs and they go ballistic because “ITS THE FOOD AND WATER CHANGE LADY!!!”
It’s taken a while for my co workers to notice that they don’t go crazy for anyone else until I come down the stairs, but it was so cool to see their faces light up and have them in awe that these little fish are a lot more aware than they had thought.
No but I do see a blatant disregard for fish lives by supposed animal lovers. For some reason fish are often excluded in that love and looked upon as lowly creatures. I mean… as far as pets go, fish are pretty much like having a painting on the wall. It’s not like you can cuddle your fish on the couch or teach many of them tricks or anything.
I mean you are actually teaching them though, most fish can recognize their owners. When they see you they see their owner, small things like opening the lid and they all rush up… you technically taught that as a good command. Make sure to rinse your aquarium around sand folks.
Like if a fish decides it’s going to eat a certain coral, there’s no amount of training you can do to make it stop, it has to leave the system or you cant keep that coral anymore. You can train cats and dogs not to eat stuff they arent supposed to.
My tanks are all heavily planted. I think of them a lot more like artwork but to answer your question, no I’ve never heard anybody here call them furniture. “Have them and just flush them down the toliet “I’ve been told. But hobby takes work knowledge and gives you relaxation and fish on going learning.
I’m feeling super sad and wanted some support from the group. My beautiful bubble bellied molly, Whitey, unfortunately passed away after swimming upside down and I’m quite sure it was stress.
I feel AWFUL because I’m 100% sure it was completely my fault and not due to his healthy.
I had been acting erratically with my husbandry (complete water changes, medicines into the water, etc.) because his only tank mate Baby Blue (betta) that he had lived with for almost a year, had a sore that I was desperately trying to fix. I have since found out from my betta group he was just marbling.
After just 5 minutes of putting Whitey and Baby Blue in their clean hospital tank, White passed. I’m quite sure he was stressed and that the water was way too hot. He is a beautiful fish and they both were so playful and healthy for so long. Feeling really guilty.
I don’t think you should feel bad. I had 2 male mollies that I raised from fry that reached maturity. They were fighting each other to get to a female and I took advice from another group and put them in a different tank. The next day they had both died. I felt extremely guilty.
