Rescued Giant Danio Fish Tank Setup

So I came home from work and someone left a bucket of fish on my doorstep. The owner had a pond and it was getting too cold because winter is on its way here in Minnesota. So they had to remove some of the fish or else they would freeze to death. So I now have these aquarium fish in my possession.

More Fish Tank Banter

Hey guys! So I had a great tank set up with 5 WCMMs, a dwarf gourami, and a peacock gudgeon and some snails… in a 10-gallon tank and it has been great for months.

well I have been busy and it had been too long since I did a water change and my tank’s nitrates were extremely high and knocked out most my tank. Only three fish live…the dwarf gourami and these last two WCMMs. Looking for restocking ideas.

I had a Back Beard Algea problem and was getting pretty frustrated. Then I picked up a couple of fish that ate it all away in about a month! (In the 3 picture it’s the guy just above the heater.) I am amazed that just two took care of the problem.

This Beautiful jerk tried to give me a heart attack today. As you can tell he’s not sorry
I woke up this morning and made my rounds feeding and checking on all my pets(I literally have a zoo in my house) so when I came to his tank to turn his lights on and give him his morning treat(brine shrimp) I saw he was laying on the filter intake and I literally jumped into momma bear mode and threw off the lid and went to get him unstuck and he swims off before I even stick my hand in there. Turns out one of my doggos bumped into the outlet and unplugged the filter so it wasn’t even on. My fish is fine, but I’m still a bit traumatized. He has a Betta leaf that he usually sleeps on so seeing him on the filter scared me to death. Picture of my son and his unamused look and yes, I do know that his fins are curled at the ends and he has been treated but when I bought him he was like this but worse and that’s the whole reason I have him. If y’all seen his baby pictures y’all would see he looks way better now.

So this is my first post.. a little apprehensive so please be kind. (None of this is for sale. Just FYI). I just acquired all of this for free from Facebook market place. Things I know or think I know. 40 gallon aquarium- it was set up for salt water at some point in its life but has not been set up for a while. It was called a “wet- dry filter” and I was told I could use it for either salt water or freshwater aquariums. Came with no filter media, filter sock, or any instructions for anything other than mounting the lights and one manual for a Nanostream?!

I have found some information on how the filter works and some diagrams on how to set it all up. I’m at the point where I just don’t know what I don’t know. I need any advice, comments, concerns, and or discussion that I can get.

Aquarium giant danios are fairly easy to care for. Adequate swim space is maybe the hardest parameter to serve.

In theory I would like to do a freshwater set up. If at all possible. Also how do I remove calcium build up. I’ve included pictures of everything that I recieved. As you can see it is a mess, so if there is anything you want to see closer to see what it is let me know.
