Planted aquarium advice. This is the biggest tip i can give anyone for their planted aquarium (or any kind of fishtank) If you understand how this nitrogen cycle works, you will have a much easier time with you planted tank.

So Today I want to break down the single biggest tip I can give you for your planted aquarium. Everyone wants to know how to get a better looking planted tank, “My Plants won’t Grow” My fish are sick, I want a carpet. All of these things can be achieved with a simple understanding of some important, yet simple concepts, that once you have mastered will make everything else easier, ‘
We are going to unpack today just the tip of the iceberg here, but once you understand this simple concept, this simple goal, we can move on to more detailed areas of this conversation. Each component of what I am going to break down from a high level deserves much more details and we will flush this out more, once we hammer home the core concept So let’s start here.

I am going to begin by talking about the fundamental starting point and move on from there. We are going to start with the basics of the nitrogen cycle , then I am going to give you the often over looked and what I believe is the biggest tip I can give you.
Ok. So as many of you know we Start with the basics of Ammonia (NH3) This is caused by fish waste, decaying plant matter un eaten food, anything that is breaking down in your tank.
NOW- This is Toxic to your fish. So, as many of you already know, we want to take our time to Cycle our fish tank. By cycling we mean allowing time for these various phases to take place, let’s break these down.
Step one it to convert Ammonia to Nitrites- This is the stepping stone, we are half way home at this point if you will. We are going from NO2 to NO3 which is Nitrates. So we are going from Nitrites which are Toxic to Nitrates- Which are not toxic.
NOW- This should be nothing new here, however somehow people forget about our friend Mother Nature. Plants Absorb NITRATE, now before I jump into the biggest advice I can give you, I want to make sure we understand that JUST BECAUSE WE CAN”T SEE Them doesn’t mean we shouldn’t create a home for them.
This Beneficial Bacteria, Nitrosomonas and NitrosSpira, while they are Not Visibel, they are INSANELY IMPORTANT and should not be over looked.
This beneficial bacteria needs at a home, “Are you too good for your home?!”
The Vast Majority of your beneficial bacteria lives in your substrate, gravel, whatever you wanna use. So, we want to make sure we have this setup and going. I like to wait a month- yes 30 days before we start adding fish. Notice I said fish NOT PLANTS, Generally speaking, I we can add plants almost instantly. There are some things we can do to grow our bio load faster.
