They are very interactive and easily become a part of the family. It is important to care for your Oscar cichlid properly to have it live to it’s full potential.

We discuss the importance of heavy filtration in an Oscar cichlid aquarium. Oscar fish grow to fairly large sizes and produce a lot of waste. It is important to have the proper sized fish tank aquarium for your Oscar to really thrive. Tiger Oscar fish are known to be aggressive, though some are milder and will do okay in huge monster community aquariums.
It is recommended at no time to keep any Oscar cichlid in an aquarium of less than 75 gallons minimum. It is preferable to have them in at least a 6 foot long tank or a 125 gallon. A full grown oscar can get over 12=14″ and require adequate space to really thrive. Juvenile oscars grow super quickly and can easily grow 1″ per month. This means that if smaller aquariums they will quickly need to be upgraded. It is more practical to start with a large enough sized fish tank to house your monster Oscar fish.
Due to the large size of Oscars large water changes are recommended to keep nitrates in low levels. These fish are hardy but can be quite sensitive to poor water quality and other stress related issues. In terms of diet, for an Oscar fish, they are omnivorous and do well on a varied diet with a quality pellet as a main staple. It is highly advised not to use feeder goldfish when caring for your Oscar. Oscar goldfish feeding ca easily be avoided. These cichlids do not get much if any nutritional value from eating live goldfish. If live feeding goldfish to your Oscar you are more likely to risk disease than gain any substantial benefit. Please consider alternatives for your Oscar cichlid, goldfish feeding is not recommended. Please consider using alternatives to feeding oscars goldfish, such as frozen treats, freeze dried treats or meal worms, etc.They should also avoid eating mammal based meats.
