Just over one week into my plenum build. I have 4 fancy goldfish in a 40 breeder. Tank is fully cycled thanks to old media and substrate. I tore everything down, inserted a plenum with 3-4 inches of substrate (gravel, kitty litter, laterite, gravel, capped with sand) I normally do a weekly 50% water change, when nitrates are just below 40ppm. Well, 8 days into this build and my reading are 0 Ammonia/0 nitrite/ and less than 5ppm nitrates. I’ve been feeding normal amounts and testing everyday. I have seen nitrates steadily decrease through the week. Anoxic filtration with a plenum works. My mind is blown! Thank you, Dr. Novak.
