How to Fish Your First Kayak Tournament: A Beginner’s Guide to Catch, Photo, Release Bass Tourneys

It’s almost pre-spawn and the bass fishing tournaments will be kicking off in full force over the next few weeks. For that reason I thought it might be helpful to create a beginner’s guide to Catch, Photo, Release bass tournaments. CPR (Catch, Photo, Release) is the most common form of competitive fishing in the kayak community. Because kayaks do not have live wells, the format utilizes a standardized measuring device (aka bump board), a camera-enabled phone, and a unique identifier to allow anglers to compete against one another on the open water. Unlike conventional bass tournaments that measure the weight of the fish, CPR tournaments focus on the length of the fish.
As the name implies, the process consists of catcing the fish, photographing it on a standardized measuring device, and releasing it directly back into the water.
The benefits of this format include:
1) opening competition to anglers outside of the bass boating community,
2) a lower cost to entry
3) reducing fish mortality resulting from the handling and transportation of fish in a live well
4) promoting conservation and improving fisheries by not removing bedding fish from their spawning grounds
Anglers of all ages, experience, and ability participate in this fun and rapidly-growing past time. This guide is meant to provide information for folks interested in participating in their first tournament and might have outstanding questions about the process.
