Dartmouth Health and WMUR Heart-Healthy Tip: Eat a nutritious diet
Eating a healthy diet lowers the risk of heart disease. Heart-healthy foods can lower your blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol, as well as help you maintain a healthy body weight, explains cardiologist Kerrilyn C. Hennessey, MD, with the Heart & Vascular Center at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
A nutritious diet includes one rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, whole grains, and fish, she says. Try and get as many colors in your diet as possible.
And limit your consumption of sweets, sugar-sweetened beverages, and red meat.
