Why Are My Dogs Ears Itchy? – Dog Health Vet Advice

If you’re asking why are my dogs ears itchy then there are several different causes of itchy ears that you need to know about.

The causes of itching and ear disease in dogs include:
1 – Parasites – fleas, mites – ear mites
2 – Allergic skin disease – fleas, pollen/atopy, food
3 – Local ear problems – long term disease causing scarring, narrow canals, hairy ears, floppy ears, water in ears – swimming, mass or foreign body in the ear.

Seldom is there an infection without an underlying problem and to properly control, treat and prevent itchy ears you need to address the underlying cause wherever possible.

Don’t ignore itchy ears and scratching as long term ear inflammation can cause scarring, making future problems more likely. It’s also miserable to be itchy all the time.

Diagnostic tests include:
– Ear smears – yeast/bacterial infections
– Culture and sensitivity
– Xrays look at middle ear if suspect disease there
– Trial treatment – antiallergy meds for example (eg apoquel)
– Diet trial

Treatment of itchy ears really depends on the underlying cause + controlling this if at all possible.

When cleaning ears, use a cleaner to help mobilize wax + create an environment that doesn’t favor the growth of bugs. Never poke q-tips or cotton buds down the ear to clean – this just pushes wax deeper + compacts it.

Skin conditions including ear disease can be frustrating and it can take some time to settle on the best treatment and prevention strategy for each individual.
