Revolution Reaction! (allergic reactions and dog hives) – Dog Health Vet Advice

Has your dog ever had dog hives or their skin become swollen and itchy? Allergic reactions in dogs are not that uncommon and can be to topical treatments applied directly to their skin, or to an insect bite or sting.
An allergic reaction can cause several different signs and symptoms depending on how severe it is. The treatment needed will also vary. Most cases are mild and can be treated at home. Others will need more serious treatment from your veterinarian, although cases like this are rare.

Today’s #DrAlexAnswers question is:
“Hi, on Monday I went to the vet and my puppy received a dosage of Revolution for flees. After that his scratching got worst and got bumps on his stomach and ears. I don’t know what to do to stop this reaction or could it be something else. I have applied cortisone to try to cam his itching.”

Revolution contains the active ingredient selamectin and is primarily used to treat and prevent flea infestations. It’s also active against some other parasites. Like any drug, there is a small risk of side effects and it sounds like this puppy had an allergic reaction to the revolution causing itchiness and hives.
Other side effects can include, going off food, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, labored breathing, twitching + even seizures.
These side effects are considered very rare, affecting less than 1-in-10,000 animals.
Treatment of an allergy depends on the severity and can include antihistamines, steroids or adrenalin.
Want to avoid products in this class in the future in this individual dog. Talk to your vet about other products, recommendations depend on the parasites and diseases that are present in your local area, fleas, ticks, heartworm, Leishmania, Lyme disease….
