Ever since my son turned 10, he has been passionate about snakes. He started with a ball python, and over the years, he has accumulated quite the collection. His room is practically a mini-zoo, with tanks lining the walls, and a freezer in the garage stocked full of frozen rodents for feeding. Though my wife isn’t particularly fond of his hobby, she tolerates it by avoiding his room and the garage freezer. In the early days, I used to help him with the care of his snakes, but as he got older and seemed more capable, I stepped back and let him take the reins. He was diligent about their upkeep, and I was proud to see him so dedicated and responsible.
However, recently, I noticed a change in my son. He seemed stressed, so I tried to offer him a listening ear without prying too much. When I finally decided to check on his snakes, I was astonished to find an enormous snake coiled up in a tank that was far too small for it. I used to have a snake myself and felt confident in my ability to supervise his hobby, but this was something else entirely. My son wouldn’t tell me where he got the snake, and it broke my heart to see him so upset when I insisted it needed a new home. I knew the snake’s living conditions were cruel and dangerous, but I was at a loss on how to handle the situation without causing irreparable damage to our relationship.
