Hi, this is Sarah from Rover.com. Today I’m going to show you how to safely—and politely—introduce yourself to a new dog.
Dogs are more comfortable with people petting their sides rather than reaching over their heads. From their perspective, a head pat can be a little scary! Instead, crouch down on their level, and let them come to you before offering to pet them.
If they’re shy, that’s okay! Ignore the dog until they decide they’re interested in visiting with you. Patience and sensitivity to a dog’s comfort zone can go a long way toward making a new friend.
When you see a cute dog on the street, make sure you ask it’s owner before attempting to interact with the dog. They might be in training or uncomfortable with strangers, and it’s always best to have verbal permission before an impromptu introduction. Once the owner has given you permission, offer the back of your hand with your fingers closed for the dog to sniff. Once they’ve gotten a good whiff of you and seem comfortable, feel free to gently pat their sides.
Lastly, keep treats handy. When first meeting a dog, a little bribery goes a long way.
