Learning how to give a dog eye drops is a really important skill to learn if they are going to be on medication for life. But what if they are really difficult to give eye drops to and actually hate it?

Here are my top tips for giving eye drops to a wriggly, challenging dog!
– Ask your vet or the nursing team to demonstrate how they apply the drops
– See if there are alternative topical medication options that are a different consistency – some people find liquid drops easier than gels and others prefer the gels. Your dog might also prefer a change in the product.
– Warming the drop in your pocket before applying can help

Need to get to associate with having treats
– Start with giving a tiny treat you know your dog likes
– Then give treat while touching the cheek or chin
– Work your way closer to the eye and start supporting the head more firmly
– Then apply drops all the while distracting with treats, can even do 1 eye at a time
– If you are still struggling then have an honest chat with your vet
