Dog Walking Tips
The follow up from our last two posts (Dog Walking Commands & Stopping Reactivity on Walks)!
You want to take your training slow, especially if you are introducing new things to your dog or simply correcting some minor behaviors.
Take walking for example. Your dog is probably used to leading the way, making you stop so they can sniff everything in sight.
This is totally fine, by the way, but if your dog is too distracted and you want to continue your walk, introducing some leash guidance and direction followed up with a food reward can help you gain your dog’s attention again.
Using commands like “come!” and “go play!” are great ways to let your dog know what you want from them at each specific time.
This is a simple way of utilizing what we call “correction, direction, & affection” which allows you to actively train your dog while you’re on a walk AND use your dog’s daily food for training.
You’re going to walk your dog, might as well train while you do it!
