Assistance Dogs Australia: All you need to know – Expert Dog Advice | S5 Ep3 | Pooches at Play
In this episode, expert dog trainer and pet behaviourist, Lara Shannon, meets Richard from Assistance Dogs Australia to tell you all you need to know about this amazing program.
Richard explains that Assistance Dogs Australia originally began providing dogs free of charge to people living with disabilities. Nowadays, Assistance Dogs Australia also help first responders and ex-servicemen with post-traumatic stress, families with autism and even help out with educational support dogs.
Obviously, it is not cheap to train an Assistance Dog, so Richard explains that they are always looking for people to help as volunteer puppy educators. He explains that Assistance Dogs Australia provide professional puppy educator supervisors to work with the volunteers and that volunteers will have their dog food and vet bills paid for. As not everyone can make a commitment to be a volunteer puppy educator, there is also a need for “bed-and-breakfast people,” who can mind the puppies maybe overnight or for a week when the puppy educators go on holidays.
So, if you think you may be eligible for an Assistance Dog or you’d like to help out as a volunteer puppy educator or “bed and breakfast” helper, watch this episode and find out how!
