Bred from the now-extinct Bullenbeisser, also known as bull-biters, Bullenbeissers were a giant breed that had influenced bulldogs and mastiffs as well. However, when boar hunting dwindled, those from Belgium began producing smaller versions that eventually became butcher and cattle dogs. From these smaller versions of Bullenbeissers, the modern Boxer was believed to have originated from and were their direct ancestors.
