Stomatitis in the Cat: Painful and inflamed mouth/ Dr. Dan explains How to treat and fix stomatitis.
Good Morning Everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian.
In today’s video I am talking about stomatitis in the cat. This video hits a bit closer to home for me, because my cat Skabz had stomatitis. In this video I talk about stomatitis in the cat, but I also cover our experience with Skabz’s stomatitis and how we got her healthy.
Stomatitis is when the whole mouth is inflamed and infected. The mouth is just one big canker sore. Stomatitis is very painful for cats. Some cats will not eat and even groom their fur. Cats with Stomatitis will also drool a lot, because it hurts just so much.
Cat stomatitis is caused by the gums having a hypersensitivity to the enamel of the teeth. The teeth literally cause the gums and mouth to get inflamed and infected. Medications can be given to help the cat feel better and reduce any inflammation or infection in the mouth; however, it usually will not resolve the stomatitis.
Because the cat’s teeth are the problem, most veterinarian will recommended removing or extracting some or all of the teeth to help resolve the stomatitis. The bad news is that even with teeth being removed, so of the cats stomatitis will not completely resolve. The good news is most will.
Skabz is doing great now. She has been stomatitis free for about 5 years!
