ABOUT CONSTIPATION IN CATS AND HOW TO FIX IT!
It’s important to use these tips to prevent your cats from becoming constipated because it can lead to something called Megacolon, which I will explain!
Cats that are straining to go poop in the litter box may cry in pain trying to poop or they are winning because they are having leaking diarrhea around a hard poop from constipation.
Constipation is a very common issue in cats and as a Veterinarian I mainly see this in cats that are overweight or obese. There are other reasons a cat would get constipated such as a blockage from hairballs, foreign body such as eating hair ties or pelvic injuries. But OBESITY really is the number 1 reason cats can suffer from constipation.
So the first thing you need to do is put your cat on a DIET! And you can talk to your vet about this. Or simply donโt feed them as much food, but never starve a cat. They need to eat everyday or they can die.
Alright, so what is Mega Colon โMega Colon occurs when the colon smooth muscles nerves become damaged from prolonged stretching pressure from prolonged constipation. This suffocates the nerves and damages them causing a large dilated colon, ruining their function of creating peristalsis or contraction movements in the colon to pass a poop. The poop then builds up more in the colon and causes severe constipation and pain to the cat.
Megacolon in severe cases can be irreversible if the nerves are severely damaged!!
Your veterinarian will be able to easily diagnose constipation or Megacolon with a simple X-ray as well as palpating your cats abdomen and feeling a large mass of hard poop in their pelvic region.
Now lets go over cat constipation treatment and prevention tips:
1. Emergency Constipated cats may need manual removal of the fecal material under anesthesia by your veterinarian to help your cat initially removal the fecal material. Your vet will also give your cat fluids under the skin to promote hydration which also helps alleviate constipation.
2. In less severe cases, Pet Enemas are rectally administered to help your cat expelle the fecal material within 30 minutes to an hour.
3. Cats are then sent home on a veterinary prescribed oral Laxative called Lactulose which can be given two to three times a day to help keep stool soft to relieve constipation and to give the colon a break from being distended.
4. Your veterinarian will also recommend feeding your cat a wet food diet instead of dry kibbles to help increase their hydration and prevention constipation.
Supplements you can give your cat on a regular basis to reduce constipation include:
1. Laxatone gel sold online for cats as a hairball remedy can also be used to alleviate mild constipation. Simply put some on your cats nose and they can lick it off.
2. Metamucil or Psyllium which is a soluble fiber used primarily as a gentle bulk-forming laxative which you can get from your local drug store. You can give 1/4th teaspoon once or twice a day to increase fiber to alleviate constipation and promote regular bowel movements.
3. Adding more fiber to your cats diet using Cat formulated Fiber powders such as Vetasyl by Virback or using feline diabetic formulated wet food which has increased fiber in it to bind sugar for those diabetic cats.
4. Adding some Probiotics to their food. I like to use FortiFlora by Purina which is a great feline probiotic which can help aid in digestion and constipation.
5. Adding fish oils or canned sardine oil to your cats food can help aid in constipation.
And lastly increasing your cats water intake by always having fresh water available or adding more water to their wet food!
