You may have wondered whether your cat can live 20 years or more. Technically, the answer is yes!
However, an average lifespan of a cat varies a lot, from as little as 2 to around 15 years.
The longevity of a Gato, Fluffy or Molly will depend on several factors:
1. Factors
Living conditions will have the greatest impact: where and how a cat lives, what they eat, how often they go to the vets.
The most common reasons for a shorter lifespan are accidents, diseases, obesity, and lack of veterinary care.
Thus a stray cat will have a life expectancy of up to 5 years, whereas an adopted cat’s life can be twice or even three times as long.
So an indoor cat with a comfy life and regular health checks can easily reach 12-15 years.
However, many cats can reach a ripe old age, such as Creme Puff did. At her verified age of 38, she became the Guinness World Record holder!
Currently, the oldest living cat is Flossie, a 26-year-old tortie who’s enjoying her retirement in the UK.
Creme Puff and Flossie might be exceptions, but the rule still stands.
The better care you offer your cat from kitten to senior, the longer they are likely to live.
But care is not the only factor. Even the cat’s breed can make a difference!

But cats actually show little sign of aging until they are around 11 or 12!

– Vaccines are a must!
– Check them for parasites and treat accordingly
– Test an outdoor cat for FeLV/FIV once a year
– Do their blood work once a year (twice for senior cats)
– Nutrition and dental care will vary for every cat
