Home Care For Cats With Arthritis | Pet Health Advice
If your cat has arthritis, there are lots of little but really important changes you can make at home to keep them comfortable:
In this video, PDSA Vet Fran offers 7 tips for caring for your cat with arthritis:
Tip 1 – Offer easy-access bowls
Food and water bowls need to be somewhere your cat can get to without jumping or climbing stairs. They should also be slightly raised off the floor, so your cat doesn’t have to crouch whilst eating.
Tip 2 – Offer easy access litter trays
Make sure their litter trays have a low side and are easy to get to. Use a lightweight cat litter that’s easy for them to dig.
Tip 3 – Keep your cat warm
Being cold makes your cat’s arthritis more painful, so offer them a choice of warm, cosy beds in various places around the home. Make sure they’re away from draughts too.
Tip 4 – Build ramps or steps
Add ramps to your cat’s favourite spots, such as windowsills, beds or the sofa – you may also need to do this with their cat flap.
Tip 5 – Groom your cat
Cats with arthritis may struggle to groom themselves properly and maintain their claws. Help them out by grooming them every few days and clipping their claws as necessary.
Tip 6 – Maintain their weight
Keep your cat a healthy weight to take any unnecessary pressure off their joints.
Tip 7 – Speak to your vet
If you’re looking into acupuncture, joint supplements or other additional treatments, speak to your vet first to ensure they’re suitable for your cat.
