Grooming Tips for Cats — Long Hair Cat – Stray Cat Groom
Mama Gracie is a stray cat who was found when she was pregnant by a neighbor. She has beautiful long wispy fur and a sweet personality. In this video, Mama Gracie graciously demonstrates how a stray cat can be groomed with no stress or fuss. Because her coat isn’t thick and doesn’t have a ton of undercoat, her tangles are always minimal and is rarely matted. Cats with this kind of coat benefit from being brushed and combed 1-2 times per week, and cats with a thicker coat or longer fur need to be brushed and combed daily.
When grooming a cat, remember to go slow and gradually get them used to the experience. Allowing them to sniff the combs and brushes may help them relax around the new tools. Don’t force your cat to do anything it’s not comfortable with, and if you adopt a long hair cat with severe matting, take it to an experienced groomer first. Don’t attempt to de-mat a cat yourself until you have been trained how to do it. Cats have thin skin that can tear if you break the skin while trying to de-mat them. This is why daily grooming is so important. Placing a towel or blanket down under your cat can help them feel more secure during the grooming session. Some cats prefer to be held in your lap while being brushed. If you plan to bathe your cat, always give them a thorough brush and comb to remove all tangles and mats before the bath, otherwise the fur will become more matted and tangled during bathing. Clean all your tools with rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle after each use.
Gracie’s kittens are now nine weeks old and will be ready for adoption soon. This video was filmed after she gave birth, I didn’t want to stress her out while she was pregnant by trying to film her grooming sessions.
