Caring for Waco's cats: 'This is the most important thing that I do every day'

Jim Usery, 70, takes care of some 25 cats at six stops near his Waco home every day, rain or shine, which he said takes him about three hours. “Now in my retirement my labor of love truly is doing what I’m doing here,” Usery said. “This is the most important thing, in my opinion, that I do every day.”

Usery said he’s lived in a lot of places, but he’s never seen a community with so many cats as Waco. After serving as an army medic in Vietnam and a career as an editor, writer and teacher with multiple postdoctoral degrees, he’s found his time in retirement best spent caring for Waco’s furry companions.
