A cat is the first choice as a pet. Perhaps this is because cats are the cutest creatures on this earth, and everyone loves them. But there are some cat facts, like- cats don’t like to be bothered. Another cat fact is cats are extremely social. Though some people think cats are lone wolf types of creatures, that is not right.
Cat owners often raise a question- Does my cat love me? Or how can I make my cat love me? This tension is acute in new cat owners. They literally suffer from depression thinking about- What to do to make my cat like me. Does my new cat like me, or can my cat feel my love?
Well, gaining a cat’s love is not that easy again it’s not that hard too. You can simply put some effort to make your new cat like you.
You must start with love and affection given to the kitten before you can expect the kitten to love you. Don’t ever, for any reason hit or slap your cat, they will never forget it, and probably will never forgive you. When correcting undesirable behavior, be patient and persistent. Use the word NO, in a firm but not harsh tone. Remove the kitty from the mischief, and direct her attention elsewhere. And be consistent. Cats are way smarter than you think.
Make sure the kitty always has fresh water, fresh food, a clean litter box, and a ‘safe’ place she can go to. Talk to Kitty. Pet her. Always be kind.
A good start in your lives together will benefit you many, many years of love in return. But it is up to you to earn that love.
You are in control of your cat’s life as long as they live with you. They have no way of wielding control over you. That is the starting position.
However, as the controlling party, it is up to you to set the pace and your cat will suitably respond to it. All you have to do to get your cat to like you is: Be nice.
When I say be nice, I mean ‘be nice’. Don’t think for a moment that you can turn it on and off like a tap, you need to be nice and not just act nice from time to time.
Your cat is in it for the long term, It takes a long time for a cat to trust another, and that can’t happen if your attitude keeps shifting, he’ll find it confusing and alienating. Not being able to count on you is a big thing for a cat.
Reading this, you may think ‘Hell! I’m not going to give such a big part of myself to a – Cat!’ I have better things to do with my time. That’s fine, you are not a cat person, do you both of you a favour and find your kitten a new home. You’ll both benefit from it. Get a dog, they’ll love you anyway as long as you feed them and go walkies.
Otherwise, you may well think, ‘That’s what I would do anyway because my cat means something to me’, I would say just keep on doing it. Be nice to your cat and your cat will come to be nice to you. As I said earlier, Cats are a mirror that will reflect what you project to them right back at you, good or bad; it makes no difference to a cat.
If you choose to make the effort, remember the ground rules, feed your cat regularly, they like routines, somewhere quiet to retreat to, play with your cat regularly and never ever, yell at him for what he does wrong any later than when he is doing it. He won’t understand why you are being mean to him having lost its relevance.
If your control is consistent, you won’t have to punish beyond a sharp word anyway, because as you cat comes to like you, he won’t want to upset you, They like set routines, but cats do occasionally like to push at the boundaries. So not only must you be firm, you must also be consistent. Not bothering sometimes because of ‘whatever’ breaks that cycle and you have to start again. As things progress, you’ll rarely need to discipline your cat because being nice will become a habit like any other. Don’t abuse it, just treat your cat as you like to be treated.
In a short time, you and your cat will reach an understanding, and friendship will blossom, then you will come to understand what having a cat friend is all about. Earning the trust and respect of another species is a wonderful experience which enhances your life and your cat’s life, he will then be a loyal friend for life.
