Small Animal Care Tips

come with me as I rescue 2 pet rats: Laverne and Shirley

Introducing: Laverne and shirley the pet rats, who I found at “The Baltimore Humane Society” no kill shelter. The Baltimore Humane Society works to find homes for pets who have been abandoned or who have been in situations where they don’t have a good home.

I found Laverne and Shirley on petfinder.com.

They were at the Baltimore Humane Society in Reisterstown, MD.

I filled out an application online on Friday and I drove down on Saturday. It was a gorgeous day for a ride.

They seemed to me to be 6 months to 9 months old, and very healthy and active. I will say the adoption process is thorough, they make sure you are ready able and willing to care for your new friends.

I adopted the 2 fancy rats they had and brought them home with me.

Laverne lived up to her reputation, and she drew blood the first day. She is extremely protective of her sister Shirley.

It is now the 3rd day and I have had her in my pouch for an hour and she is quite happy in the pouch and lets me pet her. She gets out and in on her own volition and is not afraid of me.

I have introduced Anna (my most mellow rat) to Laverne and other than Anna whining when Laverne bothers her, they got along great.

Shirley is more shy and skittish, she will take a little more work. The aggressive rats are a little easier to catch because they come towards you.

I will be filming my progress with Laverne and Shirley.
If you’re looking for a way to help pets in need, be sure to check out the Baltimore Humane Society! They’re a great organization that helps pets find homes where they can be loved and cared for. They also run low cost veterinarian clinics and a memorial park.

From their website: “We continue to operate a low-cost, subsidized Spay, Neuter & Vaccine Clinic, which assists in helping to control the epidemic of pet overpopulation and serve low-income pet owners with quality pet care and vaccinations. In addition, our Baltimore Humane Society Memorial Park”

Thanks for watching!
