Small Animal Care Tips

Help is out there!

While we have been hard-closed for intakes for quite some time due to capacity, a situation arose the day before tropical storm Hilary was supposed to arrive. This little lady and her friend- both about 16 months old- came to us when their hoom realised that they could no longer care for them. Not having funds to buy proper food or hay, they fed them nothing but fruit for at least a week. The little girl in this video has not fared well. Thankfully, her buddy is OK. Their hoom tried the best they could to the best of their knowledge.

A regimen of 2-3 times daily baby gas drops, a round of activated charcoal, and 2-3 times daily syringe feeding with critical care has her stable, but by no means out of the woods. Both girls are on a bland diet of only hay, pellets, lettuce, and small amounts of celery leaf and bell pepper until their systems are adjusted to proper nutrition. Due to the high content of vitamin C (along with acid and sugars) in the fruit they’d been eating, I have not started vitamin C supplement, as too much C can cause stomach upset and kidney issues.

It’s sad for everyone when folks have to give up their animals because of financial difficulties. Help is out there, though! If you are having tough times affording proper care for your pets, reach out to your local rescue or shelter for assistance. Some shelters have pet food pantries and low cost vet care. Some rescues, like us, sell good quality hay and feed for much cheaper than retail stores/online, as well as offering low cost or free basic health care assistance.

We may not be able to prevent you from having to surrender your animal companions in the long run, but we can try. Thanks to #SouthBayRodentRescue for helping save these piggies. If you’re looking for pet rats, check them out on Instagram and Facebook.

If you’d like to help us continue our work to rescue and provide hospice and sanctuary to guinea pigs, mice, and rabbits in need you can donate through the links below.

In the meantime, please #adoptdontshop and share awareness about the crisis of #homelesspets so we can change the laws to better protect animals. Find petitions to stop the sale of animals in pet stores and heavily regulate breeders. Thank you!
