UVB is a hot topic in the reptile community. So, do ALL reptiles actually need UVB light to live full and healthy lives? Can any reptile species live as perfect a life without UVB as they could if they had access to it? Well, yes, SOME reptiles can live perfectly healthy lives and thrive without being offered UVB. For example, a staple in the reptile hobby, Spotted pythons or their close cousins Children’s pythons, Pygmy Pythons and that whole family does really well without UVB light. Most snakes can live without UVB and have zero health issues ever. Blind snakes or flowerpot snakes also fit here and do well without special lighting of any kind. These super tiny snakes eat insect bits and eggs and do not eat rodents. amazing pets and super cute as well. Plus they never exceed 6 inches. Axolotles also do really will in regular setups with no UVB light. These fully aquatic amphibians are not reptiles of course and in face do really will with much dimmer light because the light seems to stress them out if it’s too bright. Offer hides for them of course. One of my favorite reptile species are Chinese cave geckos. Beautiful reptiles that do so well in captivity! These guys spend their time in caves mostly and are nocturnal lizards. These animals never need special lighting as far as we know now and do well without UVB light. Kenyan Sand boas are hide and seek specialists and also do very will without special lights.
