Small Animal Care Tips

Saving someone's pet might be the most impactful action you can take for a family. 🐶👨🏻‍🚒🔥

I have a soft spot for pets and will always do what I can to support rescuing them from a fire. However, also another point on this… ⬇️

I have been on fires where someone missed a pet during a search and didn’t realize how concerning that should be. Not only from the perspective of saving the pet but…

Missing a pet during a primary search is a red flag. How good was our search if you called the primary negative but missed a dog or a cat? Would we have found any other victim, particularly a small kid? 😬

Primary searches are a balance between speed and thoroughness. Among other tips, remember to search with your HANDS – not your foot or a tool. Feeling objects with your hand is much more likely to help you identify what it is.

🚑 Get them EMS care if you are able. I have seen more than one pet resuscitated on the scene with BLS care. There are basic pet CPR classes available, as well as pet O2 masks.

🚒 Sometimes, they just need shelter. They’re terrified. If you just put them down, they may run off. Here I handed this little guy to the 1st due engine driver, who put him in the back of the engine.
