These highly compressed cichlids are familiar to most fish keepers and over their decades of domestication, have been bred into many forms. With a wide distribution and some consistent differences in populations of wild fish, it may be that the future sees some of these described as new species but in the mean time all domesticated fish are designated as Pterophyllum scalare. As social cichlids, angels should be kept as groups in large aquaria, away from tasty bite-size tetras. If you’re lucky enough to see them, altum and leopoldi angels are delicate beauties that need conditions in line with their Amazonian origins.
