How To Check Your Dog's Teeth | Pet Health Advice

Learn how to check your dog’s teeth:

Checking your dog’s teeth regularly will help you spot any problems early on, so you can get the right advice and treatment for your four-legged friend. PDSA Vet Fran shows how to check your dog’s teeth in three simple steps:

Step 1 – Check their gums
Gums should be salmon pink, and there shouldn’t be any redness, ulcers, bleeding, lumps or visible tooth roots.

Step 2 – Check their teeth
Gently touch teeth to make sure they’re not wobbly, cracked, or painful.
Check they don’t have any baby teeth left and no teeth are missing (if they’re an adult).
Check there’s no tartar – a hard brown substance that can cause problems.

Step 3 – Check their breath
Your dog’s breath shouldn’t be too stinky!

If your dog isn’t comfortable having their teeth checked, you may need to have a few short training sessions (using yummy treats) to make it a positive experience.
