General Pet Care Guide ASF (African Soft Furred Rat)
This is my general care guide on African Soft Furred Rats. Everything i say is from my own personal experiences and i hope it helps. Always do as much research as you can when it comes to pets and have a great day!
African Soft Furred Rats are relatively new to the hobby and are most frequently bred as feeders for snakes. They naturally come from a much warmer climate than rats and mice and as such need more stable and warmer environment, they do not handle the cold well.
They are slightly bigger than fancy mice but not quite as large as fancy rats. Their diet overall is pretty similar to them but usually they prefer a bit extra protein and many folks will supplement lab blocks with insects/cat food/seeds/millet/veggies and other such snacks to keep them balanced and healthy.
They do not usually eat or drink as much as mice and rats and as such they do not smell quite as strongly, but this is not an excuse to be lax on their cleaning, every 5 days or so i found was comfortable for my 3 girls.
They can be unpredictable in nature and even though they can be tamed if you handle them from a young age, they can be easily startled and can be more prone to nipping so i would NOT recommend them as a pet for children.
ASF adults can be very territorial and unbonded ones can and have killed each other before. They have been bonded as adults but it is usually safer to introduce them when they are young before they reach a more territorial age. It isn’t recommended to separate them as this can lead to fighting.
They can breed from as young as 8 weeks ( 2 months ) so it is super important to make sure you have them gendered correctly, you can very easily be overrun with lots of babies!
Being super inquisitive by nature they love to dig, explore and have lots of fun in their cages so make sure to provide them with lots of things to keep them entertained!
