Breeding Fish For Profit: Story Of A Large Clusters Of Fish Farmers | Community Report
The Eriwe fish farm village, is a product of academic research conceived to fight poverty at the community level.
It is an idea that has boomed, the farm now sits on 156 hectares of land with 1,300 small holder fish farmers, managing roughly 4000 ponds.
The farm is structured, and run on a communal set up primarily developed to impart lives.
Eriwe a river, though, not the direct source of the water at this farm, but not unconnected to why the water table here is high.
Fishing at Eriwe farm is an all-year-round business, but there are market days, where the fish is harvested and sold.
The farm also attracts people from far and near. it also remains a place of research, hosting students, international organisations, and government agencies.
Flooding, funding are a few of the challenges the farm faces but against the odds, the handlers of Eriwe fish farm village say the farm has consistently produced more than 2,000 metric tonnes of catfish yearly for the past four years and hope to scale up the number in the coming years.
