Threadfin Rainbow Fish is among the most beautiful small aquarium fish in the hobby; other common name for this fish is the feather fin rainbow fish. The name thread fin rainbow fish is due to the extra long fins like thread this fish have & when they flare they look amazing. This fish is native to parts of Indonesia & Australia. In an aquarium they grow just over 1.5 inches in length. With some basic understanding of their natural habitat it will be helpful to care for this fish in an aquarium.
Natural habitat of Thread-fin rainbow fish includes slow-moving streams, freshwater swamps, lagoons containing clear water and abundant macrophytes. It’s most commonly-found in heavily vegetated, marginal habitats less than 1.5 m in depth and is frequently associated with floating lily pads.

Male Threadfin Rainbow fish have longer fins & are more colorful than female Threadfin Rainbow fish; Males are territorial but not very aggressive to other thread fin fish. They do tend to pick a favorite spot in an aquarium & chase off other fish. Female & Juvenile fish prefer staying in a group.

Tank size – 15 to 20 gallon for fully grown
Tank Decoration – Live plants with minimal water movement, as this fish get stressed with higher water movement. Driftwood, floating plants & river rocks can be used in the aquarium to decorate the aquarium.
What are compatible Tank mates for Thread fin rainbow fish?
Its best to keep this fish in a same species aquarium as these fish cannot compete with other fast feeding fish. Although I had kept this fish with other tank mates like Lampchop Rasbora, Neon Tetra, Apple snails & Ghost Shrimps. In case you want to include these fish in a community aquarium, monitor it closely.
What to feed Thread Fin Rainbow Fish?
Feeding Feather fin Rainbow fish is a bit tricky, due to small mouth this fish have & the diet. I feed crushed flakes & micro pellets as stable food, brine shrimp & micro worms once or twice a week. The food you feed must be crushed into small particles & it should be protein based food.
