How To Check Your Cat's Teeth | Pet Health Advice

We recommend checking your cat’s teeth yourself, every month, in between vet appointments:

In this video, PDSA Vet Fran demonstrates how to check your cat’s teeth in 8 simple steps:

Step 1 – Wait until your cat is relaxed and then make sure you have enough light.

Step 2 – Stroke them to make sure their happy to be touched and then gently hold their head.

Step 3 – Tip their head slightly back and to the side, then gently pull back their lip.

Step 4 – Check their gums are salmon pink in colour with no redress, ulcers, bleeding, lumps or tooth roots on show. Inspect as far back as you can.

Step 5 – If you come across any black or grey patches, and the gums look healthy, this will just be their gum colouring.

Step 6 – Their teeth should be white and smooth. Check for any tartar and make sure that none are cracked or missing.

Step 7 – Check the bottom teeth and gums as well, then move to the other side of the mouth.

Step 8 – Finally, give your cats breath a sniff. It’s obviously not meant to be minty fresh but it also shouldn’t be too stinky.

Ultimately, if you notice anything that concerns you, contact your vet for advice.
