Small Animal Care Tips

RIP Toby; Caring For A Blind Rat.

Please read this for more Information on visual problems and Toby; Treat any eye problem or injury as an emergency and consult a vet. Prompt treatment can help to prevent blindness and pain in some conditions. So if one or both of your rats eyes have any of the following see a vet straight away,
eyes look cloudy,
are protruding,
the skin around the eye is swollen or red,
there is discharge,
there is an injury,
they look different in any way,
you suspect your rat cannot see,
your rat becomes nervous and jumpy, may not want to leave their cage.
Cataracts, tumours, bleeds, Glaucoma and infections can all lead to blindness. Trusopt eye drops can treat Glaucoma, infections need antibiotics and painkillers.
If your rat loses his sight be extra gentle and give plenty of cuddles. Make sure the cage is safe and do not move things around or your rat will get confused.
On Sunday 1st May 2016 our 20 month old rattie, Toby became very unwell and we had an emergency visit to the vet where Toby had to be put to sleep. Recently Toby had become blind suddenly which is very scary for a rat, we were monitoring his health and he was doing ok, but things change quickly for rats and the vet also detected a mass in Toby’s stomach which had not been felt on his previous visit 10 days earlier, so it looks as though Toby had cancerous tumours in his body and brain. Rats can show very few symptoms until things get very bad which is why you should always monitor your rats very closely especially as they become older or if you have a feeling something is not right. RIP, little man, we will never forget you. xxx
