How I Train: “Open” – 🐶 Dog Training for Medical Care
When I train wildlife, a lot of consideration and training goes into voluntary participation in vet care. I notice when it comes to our own pets, we often grit our teeth and force our way through the vet visit. Caring for our pets can be easier, so I use the same mentality from wildlife training to train my dog to be a participate in his care.
This training is advanced and is still a work in progress. Due to the short nature of the Short, it is also a highlight reel. Titan and I both make mistakes and we learn together.
I am training Titan, a 2-year-old English Labrador, how to open his mouth when I ask. That is a lot to ask of an energetic, curious pooch! This training will help with examining the mouth and teeth. It could also come in handy for teeth brushing or applying treatment if needed.
Notice, I don’t grab Titan during training? Titan approaches me and has the freedom to leave. No restraint is used with this training.
Is there anything you’ve trained your animals to help keep them more calm at the vet?
