Small Animal Post-Operative Care, Toby after surgery

Post-operative care is very important after any surgery. I take a few precautions with Toby for the first week or two after his surgery.

Basic rules to follow:
1. keep him very clean and in a non dusty environment
2. keep his activity low if you can (did not work with Toby, although I should have been stronger and not given him his wheel for at least a few more days)
3. keep an eye on him for any signs of swelling, infection, depression, loss of appetite or general not feeling well. Contact your vet immediately if you suspect something may be going very wrong, small animals can go downhill very quickly and tend to hide their symptoms until it is too late. If he is not eating or pooping, the incision site is swollen, inflamed, discolored, and/or hard and the animal is depressed, take to see a vet immediately.
4. give him antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory to reduce the risk of infection and other complications for a few days to a week after surgery.
5. in the case of neutering wait two to three weeks before you put him in with a female, he could be still fertile that long
