Skittle is Sick Part 2: Caring for Skittle (pet rat videos)
Part 2 – October 30, 2015 – Today Skittle received her third dose of Baytril for an ear infection, although, several rat owners I know have looked at the videos and believe it to be a stroke, mostly because of her difficulty eating on her own and her weakness.
This is part 2.
Today I went to the grocery store and bought some ripe avocados, bananas, soy baby formula, pedialyte, and got a couple of larger syringe medicine droppers from the pharmacy. Skittle isn’t better, but she isn’t worse either. She is not attempting to eat or drink on her own, so it’s been 100% up to me. I’ve removed her ability to even go up to the low shelf and removed all but two shelters, the toilet, a small food dish and a water bottle. I’m putting pedialyte and sugar water in the water bottle and I’m going to try to get her to drink from it in my lap to make sure she gets a good taste of it (it’s more sweet than salty).
I’ve solved the dilemma of her knocking over the food dish, but I need to go get some magnets to do that. Warmth is not being supplied by her cage mates, but by the heating pad, on low, being placed in between her cage bottom and her plastic floor pan. I set it off to the side of her little sleeping hut so she can enjoy the warmth without feeling like she can’t get away from it.
I don’t know how this story is going to end, but you’re welcomed to watch and learn if your rat is sick or you want to see what it takes to take care of a fancy rat once they get much older.
This video will eventually be placed in a blog at www.tinytailshammocks.com
